- Applicants should be citizens wit good physical and mental health from overseas, not currently registered in SJTU at the same degree level and holding a Bachelor's degree or equivalent by the time of application.
- Applicants are normally expected to be predicted or have achieved good academic performance in any subject or discipline, although preference may be given to candidates who have studied previously in the humanities. Graduate Record Examination(GRE) or GMAT scores are optional.
- Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of English language proficiency in either of the folling ways: IELTS(academic): overall ≥6.5, subtests≥5.5; TOEFL: IBT overall ≥90, writing≥22, reading≥20, listening≥20, speaking≥20.
If you graduated from high school or universities in native English-speaking countries listed as below and have got your graduate and degree certifications from thos universities, then you can apply without TOFEL or IELTs results in the following cases:
3.1: During your previous study, all of your programs were taught in English and all of your tests before were taken in English.
3.2: Your application date for this program should be less than 2 years to your graduation date.
3.3: Your previous school or university can issue an official certificate in English with the university's official letter paper to prove you were taught in English before,

Program Description
Program introduction
The master program of Modern Chinese Studies is a two-year program suitable for graduate students who have developed an interest in China and now want to take that to a higher level. Designed to provide a comprehensive overview of modern Chinese society and culture, it involves intensive academic training in three specific sub-directions, including Chinese Language and Literature, Chinese History, and Chinese Philosophy. The program contains public courses as the indispensable component of the educational system at SJTU, fundamental courses as the elementary unit of program education, and frontier and optional courses as the core units to deepen the student’s knowledge in his/her chosen field. In addition, optional courses are also available for all the admitted students in the program to broaden their interdisciplinary knowledge. Students in this program are encouraged to develop or extend their knowledge and understanding of the key approaches and methodologies to the humanities study of modern China, as well as their ability for interdisciplinary research. Faculty members will be always available to advise and guide students through their course study and thesis writing.

Program duration
This is a two-year program, during which the students usually finish their course study in the first academic year and focus on thesis writing in the second academic year.
Credit requirements
The enrolled students should complete at least 30 credits to meet the prerequisites of graduation, including 6 credits for public courses and 12 credits for fundamental courses. There are in total 14 GPA credits.
Degree and diploma
The enrolled students must complete their credits and assignments as required by the School of Humanities within the appointed period of time, finishing all the courses with a passing score. Once the student, with good academic integrity, has passed the thesis evaluation and oral defense, he/she could be awarded the Graduate Certificate and the Master Degree. Based on the student’s choice of sub-direction, he/she shall receive the Master’s Degree in Chinese Language and Literature or Chinese History or Chinese Philosophy.

*4. Bachelor's Degree diploma
Applicants who are in their final year of study may provide a student status instead. But applicants must make sure that their degrees will be awarded before their registration.

Academic Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English should be translated into Chinese or English and be certified by notarization. Both original and official English translated version are required.
*6. Two Recommendation Letters
Written in English from two respectable professors, including professors' contact number, email address and handwritten signature.

Research or working experience in China may be an advantage.
Having some familiarity with Chinese language. Applicants should indicate familiarity with Chinese language through records from formal language training.

Publications are not expected, but if available, details should be provided.
